Why Puppy Blend?

Genetics determine which puppies are susceptible to developmental orthopedic problems. Nutrition influences whether that susceptibility becomes a problem — and how severe it becomes.

Nutrition is the part you control.

Excess dietary calcium and rapid growth increase the risk of skeletal abnormalities in large-breed puppies. Puppy Blend was formulated to hit the optimal calcium window (1.4–1.5% on a dry matter basis) with a calcium-to-phosphorus ratio of 1.1:1 to 1.2:1, which is squarely inside AAFCO's growth range for large-size breeds.

The recipes are also moderate in calorie density, supporting the steady growth rate linked to better long-term joint outcomes. Prebiotic fibers from pumpkin and psyllium help nourish the developing gut microbiome during the critical first year.

Who It's For

  • All puppies, with special attention to large-breed puppies (expected adult weight 70 lbs or more) through 18–24 months
  • Small and medium breed puppies through about 12 months
  • Owners who want to choose their own ingredients:  organic, humanely raised, grass-fed, or locally raised, and feed their puppy in line with the health goals they have for their family

What's Inside & What It Does

  • Controlled calcium and phosphorus for normal skeletal development without excess
  • Essential minerals and amino acids to support bone and muscle growth
  • Moderate energy density for easier portion control
  • Prebiotic fiber from pumpkin and psyllium to support gut health and stool quality

Holistic Vet Blend Puppy Blend, when used to prepare the recipes as directed, is formulated to meet the nutritional levels established by the AAFCO Dog Food Nutrient Profiles for growth, including growth of large-size dog breeds (70 lbs. or more as an adult).

Finished recipes prepared as directed provide 1.4 to 1.5 percent calcium on a dry matter basis at a calcium-to-phosphorus ratio of 1.1:1 to 1.2:1.

"This is the most important window in a dog's life for building a foundation. Let's feed our puppies like family, because they are family."

  • 3 pounds lean ground turkey (85%), 93% lean beef or chicken, chicken breast, or chicken thighs
  • 1 pound carrots, diced
  • 8 ounces broccoli, diced

One canister makes over 30 pounds of food (roughly 6½ pounds or 15 cups). Refrigerate up to 4 days; freeze the rest.

Weigh the premix with a kitchen scale that measures grams, as accuracy matters for the mineral balance.

Start with the ranges below, then adjust based on your puppy’s body condition. Individual needs commonly vary by up to 50%.

Puppies under 6 months usually do best with 3–4 meals per day; after 6 months, 2–3 meals is typically enough.

Body condition is your best guide

  • Lean (ribs easy to feel, little covering, waist visible) → feed toward the higher end
  • Ideal (ribs easy to feel under a thin layer, waist visible) → middle of the range
  • Extra condition (ribs harder to find, waist softened) → lower end

Check every two weeks. Steady growth beats fast growth — every time.

Frequently asked questions

When prepared exactly as directed (stated proteins and quantities + 50 g premix per batch). Substitutions beyond the listed options will change the nutrient profile.

No, except the listed omega-3 source. Do not add extra calcium, bone meal, eggshell, or multivitamins; that works against the carefully controlled formulation.

Through controlled calcium (puppies absorb it passively and cannot regulate excess the way adults can), an appropriate calcium-to-phosphorus ratio, and moderate calorie density that supports steady rather than rapid growth. Nutrition influences how genetic predisposition to orthopedic disease is expressed.

Yes. Many families start this way. Account for total calories and ensure the kibble is also formulated for growth.

One canister makes five batches (~30 lb finished food). For small puppies this can last several weeks; for puppies already over 50 lb it is closer to 1–2 weeks. Subscription options are available.

Small and medium breeds around 12 months. Large and giant breeds at 18–24 months. We recommend transitioning to the appropriate adult Holistic Vet Blend formula at that time.

After cooking, the prepared diet can be refrigerated for 4 days. If feeding raw, the diet should be frozen in servings for up to 4 months and thawed out for each feeding thereafter. Cooked food can be frozen for up to 3 months.

The product was developed by a PhD animal nutritionist and a holistic veterinarian.

The product is made in a facility that only uses ingredients fit for human consumption (no feed-grade ingredients). The product is manufactured in California.

A certificate of analysis is provided for each batch. The individual ingredients as well as the final batch are tested for bacteria (Salmonella, coliforms, E. Coli, Staph Aureus) and fungal pathogens, lead, mercury, and arsenic.
