Peace of mind

I was always worried about how my dog would get a nutritionally complete meal if I cooked for her, so I'm glad I found this supplement for her! It's quite smelly, be warned! I wish the safety seal was easier to remove -- it tears and some of the powder gets dispersed every time.

Makes it easy

I have been looking for something like this a long time. I've always cooked for my dogs, but was never sure if it was balanced. Using Dr. Dody's amazingly easy recipes and premix eliminates all the guess work. I am a terrible cook, but even I can follow these recipes. Thanks so much for making this available.

ingredient list lacks information

When my Doberman (soul dog), Nova, was diagnosed with Cancer, I reached out to a K-9 Cancer nutritionist. I sent her what I was currently feeding Nova including the label from the Canine limited Premix. While she was impressed with the raw feed ingredients and supplements, she noted that the premix does not state how much of each item is included. As Nova got sicker, she became a finicky eater, so I was not able to make large batches of food. I had to try different things daily. I reached out to Holistic Vet to see if they could tell me how to give her the premix on a daily basis, Unfortunately I did not get the answer I was hoping for. I was told this premix is designed for batches of homemade food, not small daily feeding. Nova crossed the Rainbow Bridge in December. I now have a new Doberman, Sirius, who is on the premix. When I went in to have her ears cropped, they advised I put her on ester-c to strengthen the cartilage while she was going through the posting stage. I showed them the Premix label and while Calcium Carbonate is the first ingredient, it does not specify how much is in the recommended dosage added to her food. This left the Vets stumped on how much ester - c to give. As an example of how their ingredients are listed: ester-c (calcium ascorbate) contains 1000mg per 1 scoop (1/4 teaspoon) daily per 30 pounds dog weight. It would be great if the premix was labeled this way.

Use the guide below to create your own recipes that cater to your dog’s unique palate

1. MEAT: 3 pounds of one or a mix of red meat, poultry, or fish, browned in 2 Tbsp coconut oil

2. CARROTS: 1 pound of diced carrots, cooked

3. VEGETABLES: 4 ounces of one or a mix of broccoli, kale, or spinach, chopped and cooked

4. CARBOHYDRATES: 5 cups of one or a mix of cooked brown or white rice, white or sweet potato, quinoa, rolled oats, pearl barley, gluten-free or regular pasta

5. OMEGA-3: 2 tsp of Holistic Vet Blend® Icelandic Fish Oil or two 3.75 oz tins of sardines in water

6. PREMIX: 2 Tbsp/30 g of Holistic Vet Blend® Limited Premix

Stovetop Instructions:

Cook each item separately: Cook the rice in a rice cooker or on the stovetop. Bake or steam potatoes. Cook quinoa with broth or water. Sauté vegetables with the meat or steam separately. Combine all items and add the premix and Omega-3 source after cooking.

InstantPot Instructions:

This is my favorite method and requires the least amount of work. Sauté meat in coconut oil in a 6-qt or larger pressure cooker. Add vegetables, carbohydrates and liquid required for your carb of choice (consult InstantPot cookbooks). Cook on high pressure for the time necessary for the carbohydrate. Manual release. Add Premix and Omega-3 source.

This recipe yields approximately 6 pounds of food or 12-14 cups depending on ingredient choices. One canister of HVB contains enough premix for 8 recipes so will ultimately yield 45-50 pounds of food. Keep up to 4 days of food in the refrigerator and freeze the rest.

More recipes are available in our free cookbook and on our YouTube channel.

Adult/puppy weight:

5-10 pounds feed ¾ - 1 cup (canister will last 3-4 months)

11-25 pounds feed 1-3 cups (canister will last 2-3 months)

26-50 pounds feed 3-5 cups (canister will last 1-2 months)

51-75 pounds feed 5-7 cups (canister will last 2 weeks)

75-100 pounds feed 7-10 cups (canister will last 1-2 weeks)

*Fish and lean meats will require 1-2.5 times the amount dependent on leanness.

2. Small Medium dog/11- 25 lbs (ex. Cavalier King Charles, Pug, Beagle) 1-3+ months

We recommend large breed puppies (Labrador size or greater) be fed large breed puppy food until 8 months of age as they need to grow at a more controlled rate. Toy, small, and medium-sized breeds may begin the diet at 4 months of age.

No. You should prepare the recipe in its entirety and add the premix last and mix in well.

Make sure you download our free cookbookand check out our YouTube channel. Limited blend recipes can be prepared on the stove or in a pressure cooker or slow cooker. This recipe is easily prepared with all 5 ingredients added to a 6-quart pressure cooker (Holistic Vet Blend® Regular Premix recipes have more vegetables and fit better in an 8-quart pressure cooker). We also have raw recipes.

After cooking, the prepared diet can be refrigerated for 4 days. If feeding raw, the diet should be frozen in servings for up to 4 months and thawed out for each feeding thereafter. Cooked food can be refrigerated for up to 6 months.

The product was developed by a PhD animal nutritionist and a veterinarian.

The product is made in a facility that only uses ingredients fit for human consumption (no feed-grade ingredients). The product is manufactured in California.

A certificate of analysis is provided for each batch. The individual ingredients as well as the final batch are tested for bacteria (Salmonella, coliforms, E. Coli, Staph Aureus) and fungal pathogens, lead, mercury, and arsenic.

Although many pets have done very well on raw diets, each individual pet and their family has different needs. AVMA does not recommend feeding raw diets due to the risks of exposure to zoonotic risks (spread of Campylobacter or Salmonella) to humans. Use proper hygiene, especially if there are immune-compromised individuals in the household. Dogs can shed these pathogens in their feces. An option is to lightly cook the meat and vegetables. Dogs cannot assimilate raw vegetables easily as they cannot break down the cell walls. The vegetables can be pureed or steamed instead.

If using raw meat, you should puree the vegetables or lightly cook them so that they are digestible.
