Our Founder

I’ve known since I was a little girl that I wanted to be a veterinarian. By the time I was 13 years old I was volunteering to clean kennels and bathe dogs as a kennel attendant. All I wanted was to be around animals and to make them happy and healthy. I got my B.S. from Cornell University in Animal Science making my way through school milking cows and mucking stalls. After I completed my veterinary degree from The University of Florida, I proceeded to do an internship at the prestigious Animal Medical Center in New York City  and I was off on the road to being the best small animal vet that I could be. It’s been 30 years now, and there have been many twists and turns, but that little girl’s dream is still being fulfilled every day.

If you ask your veterinarian about what to feed they may have a recommendation,  but unfortunately nutrition is oftentimes not a focus in a consultation. The standard recommendation is to feed a diet that has gone through AAFCO feeding trials and is certified. Here is what an AAFCO feeding trial entails for maintenance feeding:

The test starts with 8 dogs older than 1 years old of normal weight and health. Blood is drawn at the beginning and end of the six month trial. During this time, the dogs used must only eat the food being tested. After 6 months, if at least 6 out of the 8 dogs finishing the test do not lose more than 15% of their body weight, have to be removed because of nutritional causes or die, the feed passes the trial.

I think we can all agree that this is anything but rigorous evaluation of a diet and certainly it is not an indication of quality. Pet food is arguably way more regulated than food designated for human consumption. Complete and balance processed food would never be considered a healthier option for humans, yet this is considered the “gold standard” for pets. Imagine how you would feel and what you would think if you had just had a healthy human baby and the doctor gave you a purple bag of dried food and told you that was all you needed…for the rest of your child’s life… just what was in that purple bag! I don’t think so! And yet, so it has been with our pets. But not anymore.

I developed Holistic Vet Blend® to empower the consumer to choose healthy ingredients, whether they are organic, humanely reared, seasonal or local ingredients and provide the necessary minerals and vitamins to balance it.

As a busy mother and full-time practicing veterinarian I’m always looking for a situation that is doable for me. I want to make it as time efficient and flexible for you as well.

Have fun!
